The Sustainability and Environment Advisory Council (SEAC) advises the IATA Board and Director General on matters related to the sustainable development of aviation and its interface with the environment. Principal areas of activity include:

  • Environmental policies, standards and regulations at international, regional and national levels
  • Sustainable aviation fuel
  • Decarbonization strategies and pathways
  • Environmental performance monitoring
  • Sustainable finance and Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting
  • Environmental / sustainability best practice
  • Single use plastics and international cabin waste

Membership & leadership

The SEAC is composed of 19 experts from IATA’s member airlines, who are appointed by IATA’s Director General for three-year terms. The membership of the Advisory Council was last renewed in June 2022.

In June 2022, Shannon Scott Senior Manager Environmental Affairs at Emirates became Chair of the SEAC. He will serve a two-year term, after which the current Vice-Chair, Jill Blickstein, will be appointed as Chair for two years.

The Secretary of the SEAC is the IATA Senior Vice President Environment & Sustainability.

There are no permanent observers on IATA’s Advisory Councils. However, the Secretary and Chair may agree to invite subject matter experts to participate as observers in a Regular Meeting on an ad-hoc basis when their participation is necessary for one or more agenda items.

Working Groups

The SEAC has has established the following working groups to provide technical guidance on an on-going basis:

  • The IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) Oversight Council
  • The Commercial Fuel Working Group
