25by2025 - a global initiative to change the gender balance within the aviation industry

25by2025 came to life to raise awareness of the need to improve female representation in the aviation industry. This voluntary initiative is an initial step to making the aviation industry more gender balanced. With a large number of airlines and industry partners already committing to 25by2025, we are paving the way for an industry that recognizes  female talent and creates opportunities for women in which they can thrive. Join us and become one of the change agents in the aviation industry to make it truly diverse and inclusive.

Commit to Embrace Diversity

By joining 25by2025, you will commit to increase female representation in senior roles in your organization and in areas where women are traditionally under-represented. • Increase the number of women in senior positions and under-represented areas by 25%, or up to a minimum of 25% by 2025
  • Increase female nominations from their airlines for IATA governance roles to a minimum of 25% (IATA members only)

IATA commits to:

  • Create a forum for sharing best practices on diversity & inclusion and collate industry metrics in an annual update
  • Increase the number of women participating at events, panels and conferences to a minimum of 25%
  • Increase the number of women appointed to IATA governance roles to a minimum of 25%

Why is the change needed?

The numbers clearly show there is room for improvement to drive diversity & inclusion within an industry that brings people closer together. See this report from IATA Economics: Women representation in aviation (March 2022) (pdf)
Other sources show that only 5.1% of the world’s airline pilots are women (ISWAP), and women represent only about 26% of air traffic controllers; 18% of flight dispatchers; and less than 9% of aerospace engineers (Korn Ferry).

Improving gender diversity throughout the industry is needed not just because it is "the right thing to do", but also importantly it makes business sense. According to the McKinsey report "Women in the workplace 2021", “when women are well represented at the top, companies are 50 percent more likely to outperform their peers."

Moreover, achieving gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls is one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and cannot be done in isolation. Some indicators of gender equality are progressing, but there is still a lot that needs to be done. We need to provide all women with equal opportunities to advance their careers. 25by2025 aims to do just that – by providing the aviation industry with an opportunity to set achievable targets, share best practices, lessons learned and success stories.

The purpose of 25by2025 is for the aviation industry to advance the much-needed change and showcase the actions taken to change the status quo.
